The JCRS was a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients that was founded in 1904 by a group of immigrant Jewish workingmen along with the support of several leading physicians and rabbis in Denver, Colorado. Beth Israel opened in Denver's west-side community in 1920 as a Jewish old-age home. It added a Jewish-run general hospital in 1923. Sparked by Bella Mintz, it garnered the support of members of Denver's Jewish community from throughout the city. A group of girls sit in a circle and toss a ball to one another, outside the Jewish National Home for Asthmatic Children in Denver. The Home's history began in 1907 as a refuge for lower-income children whose parents were being treated for tuberculosis, or had passed away from tuberculosis. It has changed names several times, changing its focus to asthmatic children in 1953.
